No. 483: Pilsen House
Built "1880" with bold identification of
"J. Bismark." Today's condo craze is finally slowly destroying the
19th Century character of this now, mostly
Mexican neighborhood. These homeowners have bravely stalled "development."
First floor of this house is below street level as over 100 years ago new sewers
were laid on top of existing street.
The sidewalk is "valuted" and was hollow below. You can look down to the
"basement." Also see broken space on sidewalk were typical collapse
occurs. The City now has systematically filled in the
potentially deep holes of over 2.000 such vaulted sidewalks.
