No. 166: Monument to Haymarket, 2004
RETURN
TO PHOTO
The first formal recognition ever by the City of Chicago of actual "Site of the
Haymarket Tragedy." May 1, 1996.
The Kennedy Expressway, US-90/94, cuts right across here now. The police statue after being attacked a couple of times is now on the safe grounds of the police academy.
Postcard of 1907 notes the historical significance and every year, May Day is commemorated near where statue was in Chicago.
My main image has planted in protest BLACK FLAGS,
later removed. The
Anarchist history of May Day.
Before the Chicago recognition, Matehuala, S.L.P., Mexico had put up this grander monument in a central park
in 1925.
On the opposite side, the dedication is to those killed at the hands of the "capitalist hyenas."
Bill Neebe, grandson of Oscar Neebe, one of
the original accused, speaks at May Day Rally.
Plaque on base of new Monument presented by
Columbian (South America) workers to honor those fallen.
There is space for many more amicus statements.
